Are there barriers to volunteering?

We know that volunteering is often one of the best ways to give back to the community and make a difference. Volunteering can have a tremendous positive impact, but studies have shown that it remains largely a practice of "higher-status" individuals.

"While volunteering brings tremendous benefits to individuals and communities, it remains largely a practice of privilege. People of colour, low-income individuals, people with disabilities, and newcomers all volunteer at lower rates than the general population missing out on the benefits of volunteering and opportunities to contribute to their communities.” Spencer van Vloten, The Philanthropist.

Suppose volunteerism is so effective at supporting a non-profit organization’s mission delivery, increasing the confidence, social networks, and opportunities for individuals, and building community knowledge and capacity. Why is it a practice targeted at people of privilege?  

What can the social purpose sector do to create access to volunteering for all? 

It's clear we need to do more to increase diversity in volunteering. We must work to break down these barriers so that everyone has an equal opportunity to volunteer and build a stronger community. Here are a few ways we can start:

  •  Make a concerted effort to recruit volunteers from diverse backgrounds through targeted advertising, personal outreach, and partnering with organizations that serve underrepresented groups;

  •  Build an inclusive culture within volunteer organizations by welcoming and accommodating people of all backgrounds and ensuring that everyone feels like they belong;

  •  Provide training and support to volunteers from diverse backgrounds to help them feel more confident and comfortable in their roles, making it more likely they will stick with volunteering long-term; and 

  •  Look at opportunities to remove financial barriers to volunteering by covering bus fare, meals or provide opportunities for childminding. 

We need to do better. We must recognize that everyone should have an equal opportunity to volunteer, and all talents should be valued. By making diversity a priority in volunteering, we can ensure that everyone benefits from this rewarding experience.

Only then can we truly reap the benefits of volunteering for all.
